Best Smartwatch for 2017 - August 2020

I’ve purchased and tested 7 smartwatches and fitness trackers at this point (in no particular order):

  1. Samsung Gear Fit 2
  2. Fitbit Charge 2
  3. Fitbit Flex 2
  4. Fitbit Blaze
  5. Samsung Gear S3
  6. Asus Zenwatch 3
  7. Pebble 2 (Don’t buy this one!)

I will be purchasing and testing about 2 or 3 more every month for all of 2017.  I will update this post as data and testing comes in.

1 stands above the rest by leaps and bounds — The Samsung Gear S3 has all the features I want from all the other smartwatches and fitness trackers and more.  The Gear S3 is, so far, the best smartwatch in 2017.  That may change — especially if the Gear S4 comes out this year!  So, I will change this post if another watch beats it out.

Below is an incomplete list of several reasons why the Gear S3 crushes the competition:

  • Excellent battery life @ 3-4 days.
  • IP 68 resistance ==> waterproof beyond 1 meter.  This is better than all smartwatches I tested other than the very poorly made Pebble 2
  • Unique rotating bezel makes it smoother, faster, and easier to use than all the rest.  This might be the best feature.
  • Talk on the phone through my watch.  No other smartwatch that I tested can do this.  And it works well.
  • It has all the same fitness features in any other device — step tracking, heart rate monitor (a bit weak, however), sleep tracking, workout tracking, food/water tracking
  • Respond to texts via voice to text.  Other smartwatches can do this, but the Gear S3 works the best and smoothest.
  • This is the only watch that makes calls in a reasonably practical way
  • It works with Android and iPhone (stoopid Apple Watches)
  • …and more

So, if you’re in the market for a high quality smartwatch, then get the Gear S3 and don’t look back!

Asus Zenwatch 3 — My latest smartwatch to test - August 2020

After the horrible debacle that was the Pebble 2 (see my Pebble 2 Review here), I’m excited to test another “fully” featured smartwatch that isn’t just a fitness tracker with smartwatch like features.

Enter the hot and hard to get Asus Zenwatch 3.

Well, I recently got my hands on one…

I’ve been wearing it for several days since shooting that video and can say it has its positives and negatives.  It is FAR superior to the Pebble 2 and not because it way prettier — in screen and design.

My full review of the watch will be coming soon…stay tuned!

Pebble 2 — my latest smartwatch to test! - August 2020

My last 3 smartwatches/fitness trackers have been: Samsung Gear Fit 2, Fitbit Charge 2, and now the Pebble 2.

I really like the Gear Fit 2. It seems to have fit well halfway between a fitness tracker and a smarwatch.

I wasn’t as happy with the Fitbit Charge 2.  It was missing some features that I really enjoyed on the Gear Fit 2.

I’m very excited to try out the Pebble 2.  It has much better battery life and is waterproof up to 30 meters!

I’m currently wearing both the Gear Fit 2 and the Pebble 2 to compare step and sleep data (like I did with the Gear Fit 2 and Fitbit Charge 2).

…let’s see what happens!

Fitbit Blaze Vs. Samsung Gear Fit 2

Fitbit Blaze Vs. Samsung Gear Fit 2 - August 2020

Smart accessories are all the rage in the digital age. After smartphones, there came smartwatches. Now here come smart fitness trackers that are just as nifty and essential accessories for people who want to monitor their fitness habits. Fitness buffs wear fitness trackers on their wrists throughout  the day. These devices also have awesome and practical features for people who are keen about living healthy lives. Two of the most popular fitness trackers to date are the Samsung Gear Fit 2 and the Fitbit Blaze. Here is a comparison of these two top fitness gadgets.

Design and Specs

The Samsung Gear Fit 2 has 51.2 x 24.5mm dimensions. It does not look much different than other traditional fitness trackers. Its 1.5 AMOLED screen with 216 x 432 pixels resolution is has a stretched-out and curved design. You have the tracker that is attached to your wrist with a plastic strap, and you can also choose from colors of black, blue or pink. Conversely, Fitbit Blaze has 25.4 x 40.1mm dimensions and is designed with a black front panel. It is featured with a 1.25 inch square LDC screen with 240 x 180 pixels resolution encased in a stainless steel frame. You can either choose from the several colors of its removable plastic straps, such as blue-silver, plum-silver, black-silver and black-gunmetal.

Samsung Gear Fit 2 has a 3 to 4 days battery life while Fitbit Blaze has 5 days battery life. Both of the trackers can also be connected to smartphones, with the Gear Fit 2 being compatible with the Bluetooth 4.2 and Fitbit Blaze compatible with Bluetooth 4.0.

Fitness Tracking Capabilities

The Gear Fit 2 and Fitbit Blaze are both installed with a heart rate monitor and are also able to track motion through an accelerometer. However, the Gear Fit 2, in addition, offers a barometer and a gyroscope that can track the orientation of the device. Meanwhile, Fitbit Blaze, as an added perk, offers an altimeter that functions in the same way as the barometer. You can therefore, use it to detect altitude. An ambient light sensor is also available in the Fitbit Blaze.

Both Samsung Gear Fit 2 and Fitness Blaze are compatible to use with smartphones. Gear Fit 2 works well with smartphones operating with at least Android 4.4 while Fitbit Blaze supports either Android, iOS and Windows.

What Is The Better Choice?

Taking these factors into consideration, you can also make a better choice for your fitness tracker, whether the Gear Fit 2 or the Blaze depending on your particular needs and fancy.  Here is a video of them side by side so you can decide which is better for you.

Top 3 Smart Watches

Top 3 Smart Watches in October 2016 - August 2020

The least important thing that a watch does is to tell time.

A good smartwatch is about how much more it can offer and about how it does it. And considering that in the world that we live in today, 95% of watch buyers are men, the best smart watches have to address their utmost needs. It should give the ultimate watch experience; not only tell the time but also keep the important notifications straight in your list and even control and run the native apps.

What is even more intriguing about smartphones is that they can perform a ton of other tricks such as enabling you to search the internet by issuing voice commands, tracking your exercise patterns through a GPS and can even let you check out of the grocery store without having to use your wallet.

Samsung Gear S2
Samsung Gear S2 is by far the best smartwatch in the markets. It has around design and a clever rotating bezel. It has a Tizen OS which is polished and works with many android phones. Aesthetically, it’s a pleasant square watch and the perfect choice for you if you are an android user; it rocks the steel case and the leather band and is much more affordable than the competing smartwatches.

Apple watch

If you get past the price of this watch, you will have a beautifully constructed and convenient smart watch. Despite being a year old, this watch is still the best in the market with hundreds of applications, a fitness tracker, the ability to handle unlimited messages, the ability to receive and send phone calls and a store of music for local playback over Bluetooth. However, this phone battery only lasts a day. However, the Apple watch remains the most best designed and capable smartwatch that is soon to become a must have product.

Moto 360

Motos latest smart watch is an item of beauty. It is beautifully designed, has improved performance, fits comfortably, as is compatible to iphones. It is beautifully designed for display on your wrist; with it’s round, black, big and sleek design. Moto360 is a smartwatch that has been designed to actually look like a watch. It comes with a small black bar that is a light sensor meant to adjust the screen brightness, a chamfered edge meant to ring the display and two beveled edges that lead to the outer wall of the body. It has a brushed steel band that makes the sides to make it the best looking and best feeling smartwatch with a weight of only 2.2 ounces.
